So, it all began in 1870, when Mihael and Ana Schiker built the domestic carriage drivers’ restaurant called Šiker. In the stables across the street, where the Agricultural museum is now, the livestock got some rest, food and water. The carriage drivers also quenched their thirst with spirit, cider, wine and spring water, and then spread the good word about the hospitable service and homemade beverages around the area. Then, the Schikers began to serve homemade bread, meat, sausages and the restaurant was born. Their work was continued by Alojzija and Jožef Šiker in the late 19th century. During the Second World War, the third generation with Alojz and Felicita Šiker maintained the reputation of the restaurant. The fourth generation, Jože and Silva Šiker, have established the restaurant we know today. Jože’s passion was wine, including the »regal« Yellow Muscat, which is to this day the best companion to the queen of the house, the Charlotte Royal cake. They were my grandparents. My mother Breda and father Silvo are the fifth generation. They received much praise and several awards. They also renovated a large part of the interiors, remodelled the wine cellar, set up the Agricultural museum and the children’s playground. My name is Nataša and I am the sixth generation, the Šiker restaurant is in my blood. My partner and I are trying and plan on keeping the Šiker Restaurant traditional and ensure it is in step with modern times, tastes and needs of our guests. Many restaurants alike found themselves in difficult situation during these times of financial crisis. We took a risk and invested in hotel business, which is the perfect complement to the legendary restaurant. In the future, I wish to continue the great work of my ancestors and upgrade the Šiker restaurant with an even richer offer. Our overall wish is that you have a great time at the Šiker’s, you get your money’s worth, take some homemade delicacies when you leave and keep us in good memories, because that is how you will certainly return.
